Russia: Venezualan Legation in Moscow mourn death of leftist leader

Venezuela's President, Hugo Chavez died on Tuesday night aged 58, ending 14 years of rule. News of the leader's death following a two year battle with cancer, was announced by Vice President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday afternoon. The announcement of the famed socialist leader's death was met with tears of sorrow by diplomats gathered in the Embassy of Venezuela in Moscow early Wednesday morning.

Under President Hugo Chavez, Caracas and Moscow continued good relations with Venezuela as one of Russia's key trading and military allies in Latin America after Brazil. Chavez visited Russia in 2010 where he signed a deal to build Venezuela's fist nuclear power plant and bought $1.6 billion in oil assets.

Russia's U.N. Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said the death was a "tragedy" and praised Chavez as "a great politician for his country, Latin America and the world."

Foreign Minister Elias Jaua made a televised announcement that Vice President Nicolas Maduro will assume the interim Presidency, while preparations are made for elections in 30 days.
