Mass protest in Tel Aviv against govt's judicial reforms and budget
Ruptly is live from Tel Aviv on Saturday, May 27, as protesters rally across the country to demonstrate against both the government’s plan to reform the judicial system and the new 2023-2024 budget.
On Wednesday, the Knesset approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's latest budget, despite protests against the allocation of substantial subsidies to Orthodox Jewish institutions and Jewish settlements.
The budget was approved with 64 votes in favour and 56 against. In a last-minute deal with one of the ultra-Orthodox parties in his coalition, Netanyahu announced that those from ultra-Orthodox married couples pursuing religious studies would receive money from a fund of 250 million shekels ($67.5 million).
Protests against the judicial reforms have been ongoing since the plans to give lawmakers increased powers were announced in January.
