'Green comet’ C/2022 E3 (ZTF) returns to skies for first time in 50,000 years

Space, Space

The C/2022 E3 (ZTF) green comet makes its closest approach to Earth in 50,000 years, and is visible in the night sky on Wednesday, February 1.

It will come within 42 million km of our planet and is seen for the first time since the Stone Age.

Scientists believe the green color is due to diatomic carbon, which emits green light in the presence of UV solar radiation.

It should be visible with the naked eye, although views will depend on the location and light pollution. Astronomers have already been following it with telescopes and binoculars since mid-January.
