Mass rally in Paris against Macron’s pension reforms
Ruptly is live from the French capital on Tuesday, January 31 as thousands of citizens take to the streets in a fresh round of protests against new pension reforms.
According to workers’ unions, more than two million people participated in marches all over the country following President Emmanuel Macron's proposal earlier this month to extend the retirement age to 64 by 2030.
France, along with a handful of other EU countries, has the lowest retirement age in Europe, and spends nearly 14 percent of its economic output on pensions. The last reform, in 2011, raised the retirement age from 60 to 62.
