Live from Place de la Republique as Parisians mourn beheaded teacher

France, Paris

Ruptly is live from Place de la Republique in Paris on Sunday, October 18, as people gather to pay tributes to the man who was decapitated in what authorities call a terror attack near the capital on Friday night.

On Friday, 47-year-old history teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded outside his school in Conflans Sainte-Honorine, northwest of Paris. The teacher had recently showed caricatures of Islam's Prophet Muhammad to his students during a discussion on freedom of speech.

The suspect was identified as being Abdulak Abuezidovich A., a 18-year-old Russian of “Chechen origin” who lived in Evreux, Normandy, with a refugee status.

It is reported that the attacker was chased from the site and later shot dead in nearby Eragny-Sur-Oise.

An anti-terrorist prosecutor has been called in to lead the investigation into the attack.
