At least three people, including two police officers, were reportedly killed in Nakano, Nagano prefecture, on Thursday.

The suspect, armed with a rifle and knife, was holed up inside a building, according to police sources and media reports from the scene.

Footage shows security staff patrolling the area and controlling traffic, as well as an ambulance arriving at the scene. The motive for the apparent attack remains unclear.

Gun-related violence remains rare in Japan, with the last shooting involving multiple police officers taking place over three decades ago. Last July, former prime minister Shinzo Abe was shot dead at an event in Nara City, Nara Prefecture.
