
Russia: Celebrations marking ninth anniversary of Crimea's reunification take place in republic's cities
Celebrations and rallies marking the ninth anniversary of Crimea's reunification with Russia were held in Sevastopol and Simferopol on Saturday.
Ruptly footage shows residents gathering for a concert and flower laying ceremony at Memorial in honour of Second Heroic Sevastopol Defence, while a motorbike rally took place in Simferopol streets.
For their part, Sevastopol and Simferopol mayors congratulated citizens on the anniversary of the peninsula's accession to Russia.
"The reunification of Crimea with Russia is a symbol of the return of Russian lands, a symbol of the birth of a new world order based on justice and mutual respect. Happy holiday, friends!", said the Head of the Republic of Crimea Sergei Aksyonov as he congratulated the residents of the peninsula on Saturday.
A referendum on Crimea's status took place on March 16, 2014. The final results showed that 96.77 per cent voted in favour of Crimea seceding from Ukraine and becoming part of the Russian Federation.
Celebrations marking the event also took place in various other Russian cities on Saturday.
