French riot police arrested dozens of demonstrators during an escalated protest in Paris against the government’s pension reform, on Friday.
Footage features protesters rallying, chanting and throwing projectiles and fireworks at riot police on the streets. Protesters could also be seen escaping and running away from the tear gas canisters. French riot police were later witnessed taking protesters away, chasing and arresting them.
Different towns and cities, such as Rennes in the west, the southern port city of Marseilles, Lyon, and Paris, witnessed demonstrations and violence as well. The country’s Interior Minister, Gerald Darmanin, reported that 310 people were arrested during the protests.
Fresh demonstrations broke out across France following the decision by the country's president Emmanuel Macron to implement unpopular reforms that raised the retirement age from 62 to 64 without a vote. In response, motions of no confidence have been filed against the government. The first motion was signed by members of the left-wing Nupes coalition in parliament, as well as independents. A second motion was filed by the far-right National Rally party.
Both of these motions are scheduled to be debated early next week. Marine Le Pen, who leads the National Rally MPs in parliament, has called the government's decision to implement the pension changes "a complete failure".
