Ilham Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan said Baku would be sending half of its total exports of natural gas to Europe in 2023, during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin on Tuesday.

"We are increasing our gas exports to Europe. While we exported only 8 billion cubic metres of natural gas to Europe in 2021, that number will be around 12 billion this year,” Aliyev said.

"That means that's half of our total export. In the coming years we will expand our export potential and export geography in Europe," he added.

The Azerbaijani President also claimed that 'at least ten' European countries had expressed interest in receiving gas from Baku since the onset of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Earlier in the press briefing, Chancellor Scholz hailed Azerbaijan as a 'partner of growing importance' to the European Union for its potential to allow for the diversification of energy supply across the continent.

"Azerbaijan is a partner of growing importance for Germany and the European Union and the country has the potential to make an important contribution to the diversification of German and European energy supplies,” the Chancellor said.

“This includes when it comes to gas, for example, but also when it comes to the expansion of renewable energies in the country itself and the export opportunities that result from this."

Scholz and Aliyev also told journalists they had discussed the ongoing conflict between Azerbaijan and Armenia in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory, with both sides reiterating their desire to secure a peaceful resolution.

“The peaceful settlement of the conflict must be based on the principle of the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan. This includes the safety of the population in Nagorno-Karabakh. It is important that the human rights and minority rights of all residents of the two states are respected in accordance with international standards and the commitments made,” Scholz said.

"The time for peace is now. We submitted five basic principles to Armenia and I hope Armenia will not miss this opportunity. Ultimately, peace and cooperation will prevail in the South Caucasus,” Aliyev said in response.

The disputed Nagorno-Karabakh area belongs to Azerbaijan but is under the control of ethnic Armenian forces backed by the Armenian government since the separatist war in 1994.
