Soldiers of the Wagner private military company (PMC) displayed what they claimed to be foreign-made trophy weapons obtained in the battle for Soledar.

Footage taken on Wednesday features assault rifles, machine guns, and anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) with foreign markings visible.

"Here we have foreign-made, trophy weapons captured in battles. Here we have mostly US-made Browning M2 large-calibre machine guns. There are the famous [machine guns] MG 42," said a fighter with the military company.

On Friday the Ukrainian Prosecutor-General's Office accused the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhin, of 'attempting to encroach on Ukraine's territorial integrity' and of 'waging aggressive war'. Prigozhin was then summoned for questioning on 13, 14, and 15 February.

The Wagner's head has not commented on the accusation by the time of publication.

Russian Defence Ministry spokesperson Igor Konashenkov stated on January 13, that the 'liberation' of the city of Soledar in the Donetsk People's Republic was completed the night before with the help of 'courageous and selfless actions of the volunteers of the Wagner PMC assault squads'.

Moscow added that 'only in the last three days more than seven hundred Ukrainian servicemen have been annihilated near the town of Soledar'.

In his turn, a representative of the command of the eastern direction of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Serhiy Cherevaty, said on January 25 that the Ukrainian troops 'left Soledar and retreated along the outskirts to previously prepared positions'. There have been no official comments from Ukraine on data on the number of dead in the city.

The Donetsk People's Republic is one of four regions, also including the Lugansk People's Republics, Kherson and Zaporozhye, that President Vladimir Putin agreed to allow to join the Russian Federation, signing accession documents on September 30, 2022.

According to Moscow, the move followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.

Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
