Leaders were seen gathering for the seventh Community of Latin American and Caribbean States’ (CELAC) summit in Buenos Aires on Tuesday, as Brazil’s new President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was welcomed back into the organisation.
Footage shows President of Argentina, Alberto Fernandez greeting Lula, as well as President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel, Luis Arce from Bolivia, Chilean leader Gabriel Boric and others.
Brazil withdrew from the organisation under Jair Bolsonaro’s tenure, while Lula - one of the founders of CELAC - had promised to rebuild bridges following his inauguration in January.
Meanwhile, President of Uruguay Luis Lacalle Pou said his country’s aim was for a 'free trade agreement', either with the Mercosur bloc of Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay - or on its own.
"If it is with Mercosur better, no one escapes the strength that Uruguay, Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay can have together, and if not, what we have done so far is advance in a joint feasibility study with China that had its positive consequences, and now we are about to start negotiating bilaterally with China," he said.
Colombia’s Gustavo Petro also took aim at the recent events in Peru, which saw President Pedro Castillo removed from office by his Congress over allegations of corruption.
"I do not understand how a president can be imprisoned without a ruling against him, who has lost his constitutional functions, which he acquired through popular vote, without a sentence from a criminal judge in against him," he said. Petro has previously accused the country of violating the American Human Rights Convention.
14 heads of state and government attended the summit, although Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro, and Mexico’s Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador were absent.
