That long face looks familiar: China’s first cloned horse at the gallop at Beijing equestrian club
Zhuang Zhuang, China’s first cloned horse, is healthy and strong announced the Sinogene Biotechnology institution in Beijing on Wednesday. The horse now lives at Sheerwood, a horse riding club in Beijing, and will be soon seven months old.
"Zhuang Zhuang was born in the summer of 2022, he is half a year old, and his health is very good now," said Mi Jidong, the CEO of Sinogene.
According to Jidong, the process of cloning demanded a lot of time and the parties involved in the process had to meet certain technical conditions.
"We are the best company in the field of multi-species cloning, so our technology is also doing well," he stated.
The horse was born on June 6, 2022, from a surrogate female horse in the Northwest of China’s Gansu Province. The birth was possible after an arrangement under a cloning programme conducted by Sinogene Biotechnology and an equestrian club named Sherwood in 2021.
"We hope that his race results and high performance can be highly similar or even better than his surrogate mother in the future," Jidong noted.
Zhuang’s donor cells were collected from the skin samples of Ursus, a warm-blood horse owned by Sheerwood who was born in Germany in 1995 and came to China in 2007. The horse collected numerous awards in domestic and foreign horse riding games.
