Turkey: Erdogan calls on G20 to discuss grain deal to 'support poor countries' ahead of Bali summit
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that G20 countries should use their upcoming summit in Bali to discuss the Black Sea grain deal and prioritise poorer nations, while speaking in Istanbul on Friday.
"What we will do in the world, especially at the G20 Summit, with this war between Russia and Ukraine. Are we going to send this grain fertiliser to developed countries or are we going to send it to underdeveloped, poor countries? Let's take a step there for that," he said.
"Let’s give this support to underdeveloped, poor poor countries. Because Mr. Putin said this in my meeting. He said let's send this grain to these countries, Somalia, Sudan, free of charge. We agreed. Let's discuss this widely at the G20," Erdogan continued.
The Black Sea deal, agreed in July between the United Nations, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine, aimed to unblock grain exports from Ukraine’s ports, as well as food and fertiliser from Russia.
Moscow previously claimed most grain was going to the EU, which Kiev rejected.
Russia resumed participation in the deal earlier this week, after accusing Ukraine of using the grain corridor to attack its fleet - which Kiev denied. Russian President Vladimir Putin also pledged to supply grain to the "poorest countries" for free, even if his country chose to withdraw from the deal again.
The 17th G20 Heads of State and Government Summit is planned to take place on November 15-16, 2022, in Bali. Leaders of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States will attend, along with representatives from the EU.
