
Russia: Chinese and other foreign military arrive for joint Vostok 2022 drills in Primorsky region
The Russian Defence Ministry announced on Monday that the foreign military contingents taking part in the Vostok-2022 strategic drills had arrived at the Sergeevsky training ground in the Primorsky region.
The ministry noted that the military crews had already started preparing equipment and weapons, as well as studying the terrain and climate in the region.
"Strategic command and staff exercise (SCSE) Vostok-2022 are planned to include various scenarios of combined arms and coalition troops’ actions in order to ensure military security of the Russian Federation and its allies in the zone of responsibility of the Eastern Military District," the department’s statement read.
In addition to the Russian Armed Forces, foreign formations from the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Syria, India and other allied states will take part in the exercises.
During the Vostok 2022 drills, which run from September 1-7, the military units will practice defensive and offensive operations at the Burduny, Goryachiye Klyuchi, Knyaze-Volkonsky, Lagunnoye, Sergeyevsky, Telemba and Uspenovsky training grounds of the Eastern Military District and in maritime and coastal areas of the Sea of Okhotsk and the Sea of Japan, the ministry specified.
According to the department, more than 50,000 servicemen and over 5,000 units of armament and military equipment - including 140 aircraft and 60 warships, boats and support vessels - will be involved in exercises.
The forces of the Pacific Fleet and Chinese naval forces will also conduct joint exercises in the waters of the Sea of Japan, the department added.
Vostok-2022 strategic drills are held in accordance with the 1996 agreement on Confidence Building in the Military Field in the Border Area, between Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and China.
