Australia: COVID hospitalisations hit record high as country battles omicron surge

A surge in the omicron sub-variants of COVID-19 has led to record hospitalisations across Australia.

Ambulances were on the move outside Victoria's second-oldest hospital 'The Alfred' in Melbourne on Tuesday, as official data indicated 5,450 people were admitted to Australian hospitals on Monday.

The situation has been further exacerbated by a lack of staff caused by the enforcement of the vaccine mandate in the health industry.

The highly infectious BA.4 and BA.5 strains, believed to evade the immune response from previous infections or vaccinations, are blamed for driving up hospitalisations in the country.
