Japanese footballer Kazuyoshi Miura, best known as ‘King Kazu’, kicked off his 37th professional football season at the age of 54 in Suzuka on Monday.

The player attended his first training session of the season with the Suzuka Point Getters, who are currently playing in the Japan Football League, a fourth-tier division.

“Since I am older, he is already a star of hope. I want him to keep playing soccer forever, and the fact that he can move is great because it's unthinkable at my age,” commented football fan Kayo Sakatani.

The ‘King’ is the oldest known professional football player in Japan and is also among the world’s oldest players, with the current Guinness World Record being held by the Egyptian Ezzeldin Bahader, who was playing at the age of 74 in 2020.

Kazu is currently on loan from Yokohama FC, which plays in Japan’s top-tier J1 League.
