The art collective Boa Mistura and some locals of the Canada Real neighbourhood in Madrid staged an art installation on Wednesday to draw attention to the lack of electricity and other basic services in the shantytown.

The installation of luminous garlands with messages such as 'We want [electricity] contracts,' 'We keep on fighting,' 'Light for Canada' could be seen in the footage.

"We decided to bring a kind of Christmas lights, but they are not Christmas lights, they are more like banners expressing protest slogans for the return of electricity to Canada Real," said Pablo Ferreiro, a member of the art collective Boa Mistura.

The power cuts in Canada Real have been going on for more than a year. Residents of the area, Madrid's largest shantytown, have protested to the authorities demanding that the service be restored and supply contracts regularised.
