Bahamas: Cost of damage by Dorian 'will be in the billions of dollars' – Guterres
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said the financial cost of the damage caused by Hurricane Dorian "will be in the billions of dollars," during a press conference alongside Bahamas Prime Minister Hubert Minnis in Nassau on Saturday.
"The financial cost of the damage caused by Dorian is not clear, but it will be in the billions of dollars. The Bahamas cannot be expected to foot this bill alone," Guterres said, arguing for a UN climate change budget of $100 billion (€90 billion) per year for mitigation and adaptation.
The secretary general met with relief workers and visited an evacuation shelter during his trip to the devastated island nation.
Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 hurricane - the highest category - with sustained winds over 295 km/h (185 mph) made landfall in the Bahamas on September 1, causing catastrophic damage. Some 1,300 are still missing two weeks after the storm passed.
