Belgium: Soldiers patrol streets of Brussels amid fears of 'imminent' attack
Soldiers and armoured vehicles were deployed in Brussels, Saturday, after Belgian authorities raised the terror alert status in the capital to its highest level over fears of an 'imminent' attack.
The decision to raise the alert was "based on quite precise information about the risk of an attack like the one that happened in Paris," Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel said.
Residents of the Belgian capital have been advised to avoid areas of potential crowding due to a "serious and imminent threat," according to a statement released by the Crisis Centre of the Belgian Interior Ministry. Citizens have been advised to avoid sporting events and concerts in the Belgian capital, while soldiers and police have been deployed on the city's streets.
The alert comes one week after the deadly terror attacks in Paris, which left 130 people dead and just over 349 injured. Investigations into the attack have focused on Brussels, where two of the alleged Paris suicide bombers had been living. Three people face terrorism charges following their arrest earlier this week in Belgium in connection with the Paris attacks.
