
UN: "Say hello to Comandante Fidel," Putin tells Raul Castro
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with Cuban President Raul Castro on the sidelines of the 70th United Nations General Assembly in New York, Monday.
Putin commented on the strong ties between Russia and Cuba, lauding the "interesting" and "promising" projects in the energy, mechanical engineering and space sectors. He also asked the Cuban president to pass on his greetings to his brother "Comandante Fidel,' who led the Caribbean island nation from 1959 before stepping down in 2008.
Castro congratulated the Russian leader on his speech at the UN General Assembly earlier in the day, before pointing out that ties between the two countries are strong and will continue to be strengthened.
