Denmark: Refugees walk along highway after transport links closed with Germany
Hundreds of refugees began walking along a Danish highway near Padborg after entering the country through the German border, shortly before police decided to close it, Wednesday.
Several people gathered on a bridge over the highway to throw food and supplies to the refugees, who received them gratefully. They couldn't give the supplies to them by hand because police arrested those who tried to do so. One photographer was also detained on-site.
Danish authorities have decided to close road and rail links with Germany in order to prevent refugees heading north to Sweden via Denmark. They have asked the state-owned rail operator to stop all trains between Germany and Denmark until further notice.
Large numbers of refugees, mainly Syrians fleeing the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), are attempting to reach northern countries of the European Union. Although most of them have headed to Germany, Sweden is also a favoured destination.
