A group of anti-NATO protesters marched 18 kilometres (11 miles) from the outskirts of Madrid to the Torrejon Air Base, Saturday, decrying NATO's presence in Spain.
The demonstrators, many carrying Spanish Republican and Soviet flags, chanted anti-NATO slogans, including "NATO No! Bases Out!" and "Imperialism is terrorism." Participants in the rally, organised by The Global Platform against Wars (La Plataforma Global Contra Las Guerras) demanded the reduction of Spain's military expenditure and the liquidation of NATO military bases in the county.
The march culminated one kilometre (0.60 miles) from a 10,000-square metre (108,000-square feet) bunker currently under construction at the Torrejon Air Base, once used by the US Air Force. Spain became a member of the military alliance in 1982, and has two military bases with permanent US presence in Seville and Cadiz.
