Spain: Public gathers to hear news of king's abdication
People gathered Monday at cafes and bars in Madrid, as Spanish King Juan Carlos I announced his abdication from the throne. He will be succeeded by his son, 46-year-old Crown Prince Felipe.
Some said they welcomed the King's announcement, with one young woman saying the decision represented "stability," which, she added, she thought Spain "lacks." Another young man said he thought the concept of a monarchy should be done away with all together, calling it an "ancient institution."
Juan Carlos I was crowned king in November 1975, two days after the death of Francisco Franco.
