Syria: Arab parliament representatives land in Damascus
A delegation from the Arab parliament landed in Damascus on Sunday after more than a decade of the country's exclusion from the 22-member Arab League.
President of the Arab Parliament Union, Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, Muhammad al-Halbousi, and Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, Hanafi al-Jabali alongside members of Libyan parliaments were among the arrivals.
“We are standing by the Syrian people during these hard times. The Egyptian delegation, along with other Arab delegations that participated in the Conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Baghdad, decided to visit Damascus, and meet President Assad to express our constant support to Syria," Speaker of the Egyptian Parliament, Hanfi Jebali said.
Representatives of the Arab parliament were received by Syrian officials and the President of the Syrian People's Assembly Hammouda Sabbagh. Afterwards, they left for the conference room.
"We also believe that Syria must return to the Arab and international framework and regain its high-level status in the hearts and minds of all Arab political leaders. This is what we discussed in the 34th Conference of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union held recently in Baghdad," stated Member of Libyan parliament Idris al-Maghribi.
Among the topics of discussion was support for Syria's earthquake victims, as well as rejoining the Arab League, of which the Arab Parliament was a political body
In November 2011, the Arab League decided to exclude Syria from the league until Damascus implemented a previously agreed peace plan.
