The city of Haikou, located in Hainan Province, an island in the south of China, was bustling with tourists again during the Spring Festival after COVID restrictions were recently lifted.
Footage recorded on Monday showed visitors enjoying the beaches and parks of the area.
Mao, who came from Guangzhou, said she chose to travel 'firstly because the COVID restrictions have been released'.
"I don’t worry about [COVID] now. Because everyone actually wears masks, and relatively speaking, there are not that many people. There's nothing to worry about it at the moment since everyone has recovered”, said Mao.
Others were more apprehensive about the implications of the end of the restrictions, especially for the elderly.
"After all, their immunity system is relatively weak. So, I will not let them go to crowded places and I'll have them wear a mask all the time," said Wang, another tourist.
In January 2023, China lifted most of the remaining travelling restrictions due to COVID-19. Thousands of citizens are expected to travel again after three years of bans during the Chinese New Year of Spring Festival celebrations.
