Nagano prefecture's Matsumoto Castle was illuminated with a stunning LED light show on Thursday, transforming the centuries-old structure’s unique black exterior into a pulsating work of art.

Organisers used ten different light patterns for this year’s event. The illuminated castle reflects off the surface of the surrounding moat, creating an amazing mirror-like effect.

The show, which has been running since December 1, is based on a series of themes, including water, and Earth, as well as seasonal holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day.

Matsumoto Castle’s light occurs daily, every 15 minutes from 6 pm until 9.15 pm.

Admission is free for the event which will run until February 28.
