Artist Jia Jinhui has created a series of stunning rabbit sculptures ahead of the Lunar New Year next week, as seen in footage from Xizhuang village, Shanxi province, on Monday.

"2023 is the year of the rabbit in China. This means rapid progress and grand development, so we have designed several rabbits with different shapes," he explained.

Footage shows him working on his creations, sketching designs on stone blocks, cutting them to shape and working on the details. Xizhuang village has a long history associated with the art, using stone from the Mashou Mountains.

"The rabbit I designed is more than 10 centimetres," he explained. "The large one is more than 20 centimetres, from the design finalisation, polishing, and modelling, to the completion of the finished product took two months to complete," the artist continued.

Xizhuang Stone Carving Park has experienced a boom in trade, thanks to government assistance, and now comprises around 100 factories and hundreds of skilled workers, exporting all of the world.

The Jiangzhou stone carving tradition itself dates back over a thousand years, and was officially listed in 2017 as part of the cultural heritage.
