Spain: First flight from China affected by new COVID control measures arrives in Madrid

The first flight arriving from China after Spain decided to check airport arrivals from the Asian country for COVID-19 landed in Madrid on Saturday at 19.30 CET (18:30 GMT).

After landing, passengers claimed they did not pass any security controls or require PCR tests, but had their body temperature measured.

"Nothing, no PCR, nothing. We have not passed any control, they only took us down to the bus with a civil guard around the plane... And inside they took our temperature," said Oscar, a passenger from the plane.

Spain decided to require new health controls for travellers arriving from the country, citing the COVID-19 crisis.

According to local media, in addition to the temperature controls, from January 3 travellers will be required to show a vaccination certificate or a negative COVID test.

Since China dropped its 'COVID-zero' policy and many of the restrictions last month, media reports suggest the virus has been spreading rapidly, although official numbers remain low.

Other countries have imposed similar entrance restriction measures, such as France and the United Kingdom.
