Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo on Tuesday announced that as early as December 30 all travellers from China will be tested for COVID-19 upon arrival to Japan.

"First, all travellers from mainland China and those who have traveled to mainland China within 7 days will be tested at the time of entry. Second, all those who test positive in the entry inspection will be subjected to genome analysis and, in principle, will be quarantined at a waiting facility for 7 days. Thirdly, in order to ensure the highest level of security, we will restrict the increase in the number of flights to China in the future," Kishida explained.

He added the new measure "is taken to avoid rapid increase in the influx of novel coronavirus into our country by consolidating entry inspections and airports, and will be implemented with as much consideration as possible so as not to stop international human comings and goings."

"For the time being, while implementing these measures, we will respond flexibly while keeping an eye on the infection situation in China and other factors," Kishida concluded.
