Roads and squares were seen flooded in Faro on Monday, as the country's Algarve region was hit by heavy rain over the weekend.
In an effort to minimise damages caused by the the water, residents collected their belongings and cleaned their flats and shops, while firefighters were pumping water from flooded basements.
“We are checking to see what has survived after the flood because everything is broken and damaged,” said Alina, a hair salon owner.
“Everything started to flood around 6 or 7 in the morning, and we couldn't get in until nine because of the water inside the business. We have big losses; although we still don't know the value, we must see the damage,” stated Dora, owner of a betting shop.
Floods have been reported in the country's Algarve region between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.
