Nicanor and Maria, residents of the Vallecas public care home in Madrid, became the first people in the capital to receive the fourth dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Monday.

Nicanor, a 74-year-old from Extremadura, and Maria, 88, were also first in line for the original dose of the Covid-19 vaccine in December 2020.

The fourth jab, a second booster dose of the vaccine, is now available in Spain for the over-80s, as well as those in nursing homes and centres for people with disabilities. A total of 1.7 million doses will be administered in the Madrid region.

The vaccines are the new version by Moderna and Pfizer against the Omicron BA.1 sub-variant. They will subsequently be offered to younger generations, with the over-60s next in line.

It comes just a day after 50-year-old Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez tested positive for Covid-19.
