China: US must stop being a 'troublemaker' in the Taiwan Strait - MOFA spox

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) spokesperson told Washington to stop deliberately inflaming tensions in the Taiwan Strait, during a press briefing in Beijing on Monday.

"US warships frequently show off their force under the guise of freedom of navigation," said Zhao Lijian."This is not a promise of freedom and openness, but an attempt to provoke and also a deliberate undermining of regional peace and stability."

The response came after Washington announced that the USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville had entered the Strait. It was the first transit since the heightened tensions between the two countries, following the visit of US Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan.

"China once again urges the US to stop hollowing out and distorting the One-China Principle, abide by the basic norms of international relations… and avoid being a troublemaker to the stability across the Strait," Beijing's spokesperson continued.

China has repeatedly warned the US to respect its sovereignty, with 'counter-measures' following Pelosi's trip at the start of August in the form of a series of military exercises around the island. There have been three other visits to Taipei by US politicians in the same month.

Beijing regards Taiwan as part of its territory, while the island has never officially declared independence.
