The winners of the 72nd Berlinale International Film Festival held a press conference in the German capital after the awards ceremony on Wednesday.
Spanish director Carla Simon won the Golden Bear for her drama 'Alcarras.' Simon's victory meant the three most prestigious prizes on the European international festival circuit went to women.
“I remember when I was studying it was hard to come up with a female name for references. There were a few but not many or we did not learn about them either. This is changing step by step because there is a will. We are half of the world and we should tell half of the stories, shouldn’t we? I the new generations having new referents will make that at some point soon the parity will come,” Carla Simon told the press.
Also present in the press conference was Korean director Hong Sang-soo, who got the grand jury prize for 'The Novelist's Film' and it was the only male among the top winners of this year's Berlinale. The Silver Bear winner for best leading performance, actress Meltem Kaptan, the Silver Bear winner for best screenplay, Laila Stieler, and the Silver Bear winner Jury Prize, Natalia Lopez Gallardo, also spoke to journalists after the closing ceremony.
