The international jury of the 72nd Berlinale International Film Festival observed the importance of cinema during Friday's opening in Berlin after a three-year hiatus.

Among the jury members, composed of diverse personalities, was M Night Shyamalan, Jury President, who captured the general mood of the room, excited to be present at the festival after three years of the pandemic.

"I missed going to the movie theatre for three years. I am very happy to be here because we are back to the church," said Said Ben Said, producer and member of the jury, comparing the theatre to a religious institution.

Connie Nielsen, actress and producer, highlighted the cultural importance of film festivals by providing room for independent producers, distributors and filmmakers. "Films do have the potential of changing your life and, sometimes it's the most difficult to access films that do so."

18 films from around the world by young auteurs and cinema veterans are in competition, and over 200 other pictures are shown in sidebar sections.

A comprehensive and binding hygiene policy was developed to ensure the safety of all guests, including the 2G-plus-plus-proof for all events.

The Berlinale will screen Francois Ozon's 'Peter von Kant' in the Berlinale Palast at Potsdamer Platz on Friday, with the final awards ceremony on February 16.
