Sandro Botticelli's "The Man of Sorrows" will go under the hammer in New York City after remaining hidden from public view for centuries, as seen on Friday.

The painting from the Renaissance period dates to the year 1500 and, according to the auctioneer, is "a very powerful image of Christ as a man of sorrows."

Since Botticelli's do not appear on the market very often, the rarity of this piece is expected to fetch around US$ 40 million.

"It's true Botticelli is a name that everyone knows, and that is certainly something that plays a part of why we suggest an estimate of that level, but also the quality of the work itself I think that speaks for itself," added the auctioneer.

The Italian painter's masterpiece will be auctioned at Sotheby's on January 27.
