59-year-old skateboarder Rogerio Antigo from Sao Paulo, who has been skating for 48 years, demonstrated his skills at a local skate park on Monday, showing that the extreme sport, normally associated with youth culture, can be done past the mid-fifties.

“I've been a skater for 48 years, I started skating in 1974 and I've dedicated almost all my life to this wonderful sport that I consider not only a sport but also a lifestyle,” said Antigo.

“It always brought me a lot of joy, I met many people, it brought me a lot of knowledge, it taught me how to be persevering, be disciplined, it brought me education because through it I got to know almost the whole world and I am a guy who's very grateful for this wonderful sport,” added Antigo.

To all those thinking of starting, regardless of age, Antigo’s message is clear: “Get a skateboard.”

According to Antigo, it’s important to find a good instructor with the right know-how.

Skateboarding originated in the United States and first became popularised in the 1960s, growing from strength to strength over the decades. The sport gained its own corner in the Olympics at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics in 2021.
