Brazil: Boca Juniors return to Argentina as team’s game postponed after Maradona's death
Boca Juniors' team left a hotel in Porto Alegre to return to Argentina after the death of world football legend and former team player Diego Armando Maradona at his home in Tigre, on Wednesday afternoon.
CONMEBOL (South American Football Confederation) decided to reschedule the game between Internacional of Porto Alegre and Boca Juniors, due to the close connection of the Argentine team with Diego Armando Maradona.
Footage shows players walking towards the bus to go to the airport while being supported by a handful of fans.
"Maradona was a hero for us, for the country, for football. Our number 10 shirt died, our captain died, our god died. And well, that... a hug to all Argentines, and we are together," said an emotional fan.
Born in Buenos Aires, Maradona led Argentina to a World Cup title in 1986 and a World Cup final in Italy, in 1990. At the club level, he has played for Barcelona, Boca Juniors and Naples, where he became a local hero.
