Indonesia: Hundreds march against implementation of 'Omnibus' bill

Индонезия, Jakarta

Hundreds of people gathered in central Jakarta to protest against the 'omnibus' jobs creation bill on Thursday.

Alongside student unions, there were also workers from different labour organisations including the Congress of Indonesia Unions Alliance at the rally.

The new labour legislation that was passed on October 5 aims to ease business, labour and environmental adjustments to push the economy. Opponents, such as those rallying, argue this would come at the expense of employee rights, job security and environmental issues, and call on President Joko Widodo to revoke the legislation.

''This protest is our commitment to fight for the goal, as we will take two strategic steps. The first step will be a litigation strategy, while the second approach will be to protest on the street like this. So our purpose is to make sure the Omnibus law for labour is cancelled by the Jokowi administration,'' explained Indonesian labour organisation coordinator Misar.
