A relic believed to be from the manger of Jesus arrived at the Church of the Nativity in the Palestinian city of Bethlehem in the West Bank, on Saturday, as the Christmas advent season began.

Thousands of Christian pilgrims welcomed the holy relic of Jesus' manger to Bethlehem, marking the start of a four-week-period of Nativity celebrations.

The tiny piece of wood placed in a silver patterned frame is believed to belong to the manger of Jesus Christ, serving as a crib where the newborn baby was laid.

The sacred item was returned back to Bethlehem upon the special order of Pope Francis after sitting for years in Rome's Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.

The relic was brought along the streets of the Bethlehem where, according to the Bible, Jesus was born. The procession arrived at the Church of the Nativity for a special mass, although the sacred item is to be kept in the neighbour Franciscan Church of St. Catherine.
