Turkey: Dozens queue for first hearing of Gezi Park protests' trial
Dozens of people went to the Silivri Court House in Istanbul on Monday to attend the first hearing of the trial against Osman Kavala and the other 15 defendants for their contribution to the Gezi Park protests.
The 16 are charged with rebellion attempt against the government and face a lifetime in prison without parole, if convicted.
The Gezi Park protests began in May 2013 as a peaceful movement against urban development in the park, but soon erupted into nationwide unrest against current President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government, who was Prime Minister at the time.
The protest was brutally repressed by the police with tear gas and water cannons, with 11 killed, over 8,000 injured and 3,000 detained.
