Italy: 'They never involved me' - Totti hits out at ownership as he quits Roma

AS Roma legend Francesco Totti announced that he is leaving the club which he served for 30 years, starting from the youth squad up to the ambassador role which he fullfiled after retiring as a player in 2017. Totti spoke at a press conference in Rome on Monday.

"I resigned from AS Roma and I was hoping for this day to never happen. But this fateful day arrived, and for me it is very ugly and heavy. But given the conditions I think it was rightful to make this abrupt decision," Totti said.

The Roman icon blamed the American ownership, influenced by its advisor and technical director Franco Baldini, for exluding him from all the day-to-day decisions in relation to the running of the club.

"I never had the chance to express myself. They never involved me in a technical project," said Totti.

The departure of the greatest Roman football legend is expected to further worsen the situation in the club, which was already rocked by a series of fan protests after it was revealed in May that they wouldn't be extending the contract of another Roman son and captain, Daniele De Rossi.

Totti joined Roma's youth academy in 1989, making his senior debut in 1993 at age of 16. He proceeded to score 307 goals in 785 games, winning the Serie A in 2001 and the Coppa Italia twice. Totti also won 58 international appearances for Italy, winning the World Cup in 2006 in the process.

"For me today is a moment that is worse than when I stopped playing. For me separating from Roma is like dying," Totti added.
