Mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi lit a candle at the vigil for the killed 16-year-old Desiree Mariottini in Rome on Friday. Three suspects - two Senegalese citizens and one Nigerian - have been arrested for the act.
"I'm shocked by the brutality of this act, I'm shocked by how these things are still possible," said Raggi.
According to media reports, Raggi also announced an increase in police deployment in the area.
According to local media, the 16-year-old was drugged and raped before being killed by a group of migrants in a building occupied by homeless people and migrants in the capital's San Lorenzo district.
