Afghanistan: Troops prepare for operation against Taliban near Ghazni *GRAPHIC*
Afghan security forces prepared to carry out an operation against Taliban militants occupying positions near Ghazni, Wednesday. They were seen waiting on the roadside in Humvees and other armoured vehicles.
Heavy fighting in Ghazni has left parts of the city destroyed, after government forces say they successfully retook most of the city following a five day siege by the Taliban.
A large military presence can be seen in the city as locals find many buildings completely destroyed, and corpses still laying on the streets.
"Over 500 our people were killed, they burnt our markets, they looted our materials from our shops, There is nothing left for the people of Ghazni," said one local.
On Friday the Taliban's assault on Ghazni, a strategic city which lies some 150 kilometres (93 miles) south of Kabul, triggered five days of fighting with Afghan security forces, destroying infrastructure and leaving buildings smouldering.
Some 400 people are believed to have been killed and injured in the fighting, including many civilians.
