Former Portuguese Minister of Finance Mario Centeno was elected as new President of the Eurogroup, announced in a press conference in Brussels on Monday.The announcement was made by current President of the Eurogroup, Jeroen Dijsselbloem .Dijsselbloem congratulated Centeno on the new post, whilst Centeno thanked the Eurogroup members and underlined that it is an "honour" because of the "relevance of the group, of the quality of the all my colleagues, of the importance of the job we have to carry over the next couple of years.""We are very much focused on that and I will only be President of the Eurogroup because the big job has to be done by all member states, belonging to the euro, the Commission, all European institutions," concluded Centeno.The Portuguese economist is set to enter the new role in January 2018. Eurogroup finance ministers gather for informal meetings on a monthly basis to discuss significant economic and monetary policies that cut across the entire Eurozone bloc.
