Italy: 60 years on, EU leaders renew faith in Rome Treaty
EU leaders gave a press conference in Rome, Saturday, following a ceremony to mark the 60th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which saw the foundation of the European Economic Community (ECC), the precursor to the modern-day European Union.
In response to a question about whether the signing of a new 'Rome Declaration' was enough for the EU to face current challenges, President of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani said that the EU Parliament will ensure "that what we have written becomes a reality".
As for concerns about the rise of French far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen only weeks ahead of the country's presidential elections, Italian Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni stated, "We are fully convinced that the role of France in the European Union is crucial," adding that "France must indeed continue to play a central role in Europe."
