UK: Police confirm 4 deaths in London attack; police presence on streets set to rise
The national head of counter-terrorism policing and acting deputy commissioner Mark Rowley gave a statement outside Scotland Yard in London on Wednesday following a twin attack near the Houses of Parliament.
Rowley confirmed that four people had died in the attacks including a police officer protecting parliament at the time and the suspect "who was shot by a police firearms officer." At least 20 people were injured.
"Throughout the rest of the day, including when people are commuting home, and indeed over the days that will follow the police will see extra police officers, armed and unarmed on our streets," said the deputy commissioner, adding "this includes our officers working longer hours and extra shifts alongside our colleagues from British Transport Police and the City of London."
A car reportedly drove into a crowd of people on Westminster Bridge, with a person believed to be the assailant allegedly going on to stab a police officer outside the Houses of Parliament. The police officer reportedly died at the scene.
Parliament Square and Westminster Bridge have been evacuated, with all sessions in the Houses of Commons suspended.
