Germany: Witness recounts deadly bomb attack in Ansbach
Organiser of the Ansbach Open Music Festival Burkhard Baumann, recounted the shock and confusion that followed the suicide bomb attack that took place in the small German city the night before, Monday.
The witness described how the festival was promptly evacuated after an 'loud bang' was heard near the event's main venue on Sunday evening.
"It was an incredibly loud bang, which I have never heard until now, so loud and intense, but- good - the gas cooker has exploded. It was somewhat obvious to me. That it was actually a bomb, was a shock to me", he said.
The attacker had originally attempted to enter the music festival itself but allegedly turned away once he saw that security were searching visitors. He then went to a wine bar on Pfarrstrasse, where the device, believed to be in his backpack, was detonated outside.
The bomber was a 27-year-old refugee who has a history of mental illness and was previously housed in a psychiatric hospital after two suicide attempts. He had previously requested asylum in Germany which was rejected last year.
The motivation for the attack is still being investigated.
