Russia: Street named after Russian 'Rambo' Prokhorenko in Orenburg
A street in the city of Orenburg was renamed on Tuesday, in honour of the Russian soldier Aleksandr Prokhorenko who died in Syria in March. A school where the soldier studied in his hometown of Gorodki is also scheduled to be renamed in his honour.
The city authorities set a memorial plaque on the corner of one building on the 800-metre-long street which is near the city stadium.
The event was held a day before the serviceman's birthday and was attended by Prokhorenko's parents, Natalia and Aleksandr. The representatives of the city and regional authorities, including the first vice-governor of Orenburg Region, Sergei Balykin also attended.
Alexander Prokhorenko was operating as a forward air controller calling down airstrikes around the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra. He died on March 17, after allegedly ordering an airstrike on his own position, while surrounded by enemy fighters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded Prokhorenko the nation's highest military honour, the Hero of the Russian Federation.
