Italy: Police shoot mentally unstable migrant dead at makeshift workers camp
A Carabinieri officer shot dead a mentally unstable migrant after he allegedly attempted to stab the officer at a seasonal workers camp in San Ferdinando near Rosarno, Tuesday. Law enforcement quickly put the site on lockdown following the event.
The migrant reportedly became violent during a psychotic episode at the makeshift camp, according to police. After he allegedly stole something from a fellow resident in the camp, a fight broke out, with two police officers intervening. As back up arrived, the man reportedly lashed out at one of the officers with a knife. The police officer responded by shooting the main in the chest, killing him.
A friend of the deceased man blamed the Carabinieri for his death, saying it was unbelievable that such a number of officers could not take the man down without killing him. "There were seven of them inside and they didn't let any black person inside to check how the body was, how the arms, how the legs were. As the ambulance came, they covered him, and put it on the ambulance, and he was gone", said the bystander.
Riot police later arrived on the scene following an angry reaction from those on site.
Non-governmental organisations, including Doctors Without Borders (MSF), have repeatedly criticised the poor living conditions at the migrant workers camps around Rosarno. MSF have described the makeshift tent sites for seasonal workers as being more poorly equipped that emergency refugee camps in Sub Saharan Africa.
