Costa Rica: School 'opening many doors' with Mandarin Chinese classes
Mandarin classes were being held at the Uladislao Gamez School in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Wednesday. This is one of the first six public institutions in the country that have developed Mandarin language programmes for their students.
An academic coordinator explained the important role that Mandarin should play in these children's education. “Chinese is a language that opens many doors. China is a world power. Besides English, we have other languages that are important, including Chinese. It is an opportunity. The kids see it that way,” she said.
In March this year, Costa Rica’s Ministry of Public Education introduced Chinese programmes into schools for the first time, as part of an effort to include the language in Costa Rica's curriculum.
